Drafting for small shops

Drawings and cut files for small shops

The free tools on this site cover the common developments. When a job needs more — a proper shop drawing, a cut file for your laser or plasma, a part nobody has drawn yet — I can draw it for you, part-time, in the evenings.

What I can do

  • Drawings and DXF from a sketch or a photo. A dimensioned shop drawing, flat patterns for anything that gets rolled or bent, a nest or cut list, and a clean file for laser or plasma.
  • A quote calculator or job log for your shop. A small tool that prices a job from your own rates, materials and rules, or keeps track of orders.
  • Drawings for aquaculture and farm equipment. For local welders: gear for live and fresh shellfish, livestock equipment, and parts for machinery repair.

How it works

  1. Send what you have — a sketch, a photo, the dimensions — with the material, thickness, quantity and where you are.
  2. You get the exact price for the job before anything is drawn, and you decide. The quote is free.
  3. You get the drawings and files. Where one of the free tools covers the shape, the flat pattern is cross-checked against it.

What it costs

Typical prices in Canadian dollars, before any tax that applies.
JobTypical price
A simple flat pattern or DXF of one part, from your sketch or photoC$40–80
A dimensioned drawing of one part, with its DXFC$80–160
A small item of up to 5 parts: drawings and cut filesC$200–400
One food label checkedC$75–125
A quote calculator or job log for one shopQuoted on its own

Your job may come in lower or higher, depending on how much drawing it takes. You get the exact price before anything is drawn, the quote is free, and anything not in this table is quoted on its own.

What it is not

This is drafting: drawings made from your dimensions and requirements. It is not structural design — no load ratings, no calculations of strength, no stamps or sign-off. You check the drawings and the part before cutting, as with anything from this site. The work is done in FreeCAD and my own code.

The work itself is done part-time, in the evenings. I usually reply within 24 hours, often the same day.

What the files look like

The three drawings below are sample output, computed by the free tools on this site when the page was built. Client drawings are never shown.

The four panels of a hopper, developed flat
A 600 × 500 mm to 200 × 150 mm hopper, 400 mm high, developed into its four flat panels. Hopper & Transition Builder
Cone flat pattern with press-brake bend marks
A cone 600 mm to 250 mm, 400 mm high, as one flat sector with press-brake bend marks for 12 facets. Cone / Frustum Configurator
Pipe saddle unwrapped into a wrap-around template
An 88.9 mm OD branch on a 168.3 mm OD header at 45°, unwrapped into its wrap-around template. Pipe Cut Template Builder

For a whole job, here is one sample: a rolled cone for a fictional customer, worked out with the code of the free cone tool. Its drawing has a title block, dimensioned views, tables of the finished and flat sizes, and rolling notes; the cut file comes as a separate DXF. A drawing for your job is laid out for your part, not on this template. Open the sample PDF drawing (46 KB) or download its DXF cut file (1 KB).

Label checks for small food producers

I also hold a BSc in Food Technology. For small producers — fish and shellfish, dairy, bakery, preserves, drinks — I can check a label against the federal requirements before it goes to print, and put together the written paperwork a small producer keeps:

  • the Nutrition Facts table — or whether your product is exempt from it;
  • the front-of-package (FOP) nutrition symbol, the “High in” sat fat, sugars or sodium mark, required since January 1, 2026;
  • priority food allergens, gluten sources and added sulphites, and the “Contains” statement;
  • English and French on the label.

Checks follow the CFIA’s Industry Labelling Tool and Health Canada’s guidance on the front-of-package nutrition symbol. A check is a second pair of eyes, not an approval: you stay responsible for your label. Food safety plans (preventive control plans) are not offered for now. For a label check, use the form below and choose “A food label check”.

Questions about drafting

What do you need from me for a quote?

A sketch or a photo with the main dimensions, the material and thickness, how many you need, and what you want back — a drawing, a cut file, or both. A rough hand sketch is fine; so are measurements taken off an old part.

How much does it cost?

Typically C$40–80 for a simple flat pattern or DXF of one part, and C$80–160 for a dimensioned drawing of one part with its DXF; the rest is in the table on this page. You get the exact price before anything is drawn and decide then. The quote is free.

How long does it take?

The drawing is done part-time, in the evenings, so the quote comes with a date for that job. I usually reply within 24 hours, often the same day.

What files do I get?

What you ask for: a DXF for laser or plasma cutting, a dimensioned PDF drawing, or both. Where one of the free tools covers the shape, the flat pattern is cross-checked against it. A sample drawing and its cut file are linked under “What the files look like”.

Do you stamp or certify drawings?

No. This is drafting from your dimensions and requirements: no structural design, no load ratings, no strength calculations, no stamps. If a part needs design sign-off, that stays with whoever is responsible for the design.

What happens to the sketch I send?

It is used to quote and draw your job and is stored as described on the privacy page. It is never published or shown as an example.

Ask for a quote

Taken on

  • Shop drawings, flat patterns and laser or plasma files from your sketch or photo
  • A quote calculator or job log for one shop
  • Drawings of aquaculture and farm equipment for local welders
  • Food label checks for small producers

Not taken on

  • Structural or load-bearing design, strength calculations, stamps or sign-off
  • Building or permit drawings
  • Electrical and controls
  • Food safety plans (PCP / HACCP), for now
  • Cutting or welding — I draw; your shop or a cutting service makes the part

Not sure it fits? Choose the last option and ask first — a short “no, try someone else” is a fine answer too.
